The Art of Self-Portraiture 2: Rembrandt van Rijn to Jacques-Louis David

Second in a series of four day schools

The 'selfie' might be a recent phenomenon but self-portraiture has a far longer - and more distinguished - history! In the Baroque era portraits take a more dramatic turn.

Rembrandt was one of the first artists to document his life in paint, capturing both the height of success and deepest personal despair.

With a growing demand for portrait painting in the eighteenth century, a self-portrait served as an advertisement of the artist's skill in capturing a likeness.

The Enlightenment sees great self-awareness but by the end of the century French artists associated with the Ancien Régime reflect a very sober image.

The course will be richly illustrated with excellent quality digital slides. Join me to explore the fascinating subject of 'Self-Portraiture' in Western Art.
